“...being in structure in a recovery environment sometimes robs you of the idea of a life outside treatment. Even activities like swimming promotes choice of company and interaction with the community as well as the benefit of exercise.” — Antony (Swimming)

“...whilst being here two weeks you are allowed to go home for the weekend to visit family and friends. It is a good experience because if you have partners and children you can enjoy yourself, and do the things you never done while on drugs and alcohol. It is a great way to get back into family life and do things with your children like, go for a picnic or swimming and interacting with the people you love the most. It is hard knowing you have to leave them to return back to treatment, but then you just look forward to your next visit home knowing that you have just made one big step to a better future.” — Paul B (Home Leave)

“...when I came to Chandos house I still had thoughts of being different. I had also put on weight through primary and allowed myself to become unfit. Due to badminton on Tuesdays and volleyball on Thursdays I have achieved a good standard of fitness. Volleyball, being a team sport, also gave me a good sense of belonging and enabled me to get to know my other peers better.

Speaking for myself personally I really enjoy the sporting activities provided by Chandos. Apart from the obvious physical advantages it has also helped me to learn a lot about myself. Winning was the most important thing in the world to me, now I can enjoy things without having the lose the fun in it.” — Mark S

“...never done this before, just listen and learn, hand over my will, because it’s never worked. So I listened and listened but nothing was said. After my one to one I thought I was missing something, am I brain dead? My next one to one came and went with the same nothingness, I think James once referred to a coffee bar chat which made me think. To cut a long story short and after a few meetings the penny dropped, it is what I can do for myself, developed by myself to make myself well.
James spoke I think your plan will work for you if you work it. I could fill a book, I worked my plan as best I could , and I did not do treatment, I let treatment do me.” — Thanks, Steve H

“...Yoga is one of the things i have found hard to get into since I have been here. Some parts are physically difficult, but it’s mainly the breathing correctly that i find hard. But as i see it working for other members of the house I keep trying and hope it will work for me.” — Gary H

“...the opportunities I have been given (at Chandos) to discuss my problems both in and out of group have been a huge part of my healing. However, some of the most valuable and challenging discoveries have been made by myself during peace and quiet. Acupuncture has provided me with this environment and more.” —Anthony W

“...River Dart, fantastic, I’ve been twice, the second time I was amazed how my confidence had improved. I actually enjoyed rock climbing and the high rope wrk in the trees, first time i was petrified if heights. It was great to have these two trips to see how much i have changed. Everything about it was excellent, Chris Milford…what a guy.” —Simon C

“...I find meditation really difficult to do alone. I was introduced to meditation after physical exercise and in a group situation. On these few occasions I experienced a serenity, a peace of mind and body which I would dearly like to find in my everyday life.” — Steve H (Meditation)
